Molestation

Last night, dinner conversation was rather serious about the molestation of women in Gamet al-Dowal in Mohandaseein during Eid and what drives men to do it especially when they're emerging from what is supposed to be the most religious period of the year (Ramadan) and during the holy festival of Eid! And the tragedy? This is not the only Eid that this has happened. I believe "hormonal imbalance" happened earlier in 2006 as well!

I was trying to look up views on the entire episode when I came across a post by someone called KAding in a forum (http://www.islamicboard.com/) where a copy of an ad released by the local authorities in the newspapers has been reproduced.

And the post translates the text as " You won't be able to stop them (i.e. guys), but you can protect yourself. He who created you knows what's best for you!"

The ad left me completely speechless, not to mention flummoxed! I am not sure what the ad is trying to say?

a/ Guys will be guys, can't be helped?
b/ As a society we are unable to do anything about this, so women, you've got to help yourselves?
c/ If you are not covered (am a little unsure what covered here refers to), expect to get harrassed? So the victim is responsible and not the perpetuators?

But does being covered, really protect you? Apparently not, cos the newspaper reports all talk about women wearing a niqab also being subjected to this terrible experience. And you possibly can't be more covered, in every sense, than with a niqab! So what does a woman do, cease to have a life outside the home?

And what about the men who perpetuate this? Don't they need to be made an example of so that others do not dare to do the same?

Sexual harassment here exists, and will continue to exist, until laws and MOST IMPORTANTLY, society FORCES the abusers to stop. The victims can't do anything - covered or uncovered; dress is meaningless. And laws alone are useless. Laws can be passed, but they will be ignored, until overturned, if the people do not force change. The kicker is society - society has to be the force to make a change. If society does not stand up against those who commit acts of sexual abuse and harassment, then the abuse and harassment WILL NOT END. Abuse happens now, because it is ACCEPTED behavior. The abuse AND the abusers (not the victims) must be made UNacceptable. Shameful. Low-class, immature, tacky... Blasphemous. Dishonorable.

Attitudes like the one in the ad infuriate me! Anything bad that happens to you is your own fault for being a woman! Men can't help themselves - it's in their chromosomes to want you and they shouldn't have to resist their natural programming. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

I agree with you...

But a question: Why women who are mothers to all men, don't/try to change their own attitude about abusing or do they? I've seen women hitting/slapping their children here...
Are they under men's foot at home? How about modern women, working, do they try to do something, with their mothers, siblings, fathers...talk?

I don't have the answers, just questions...

I guess sexual harrasment exists in every society but what caught my attention was the public and uninhibited nature of this one and that too during a religious period - that stumped me! And even more the fact that this happened before and the police did nothing but stand and watch in 2006. At least this time, they arrested people though i believe most of them, save for 2, have been released!

Yup, quiet acceptance makes the perpetuators even more bold. I dont think anyone, except the person who has been through an experience would probably understand how terrible it would be!

The Ad to my mind, is a tacit acceptance of what happens as a fact of life, and, to me, as a woman, is difficult to accept.

As a wife, I would never ever be married with a man who beats, shouts - abuses me!

There are too many women, in this country too, who are AFRAID of their husbands, brothers, fathers...

Did you see today's Daily News? "Landmark sexual harassment case ends in three-year sentence"

That is a START!!!

blogitse - while I completely agree with you sometimes reality is very different from what we think it should be.

I know women who continue to stay in abusive relationships for the sake of children, and, sometimes even for their own sake cos they are scared to be alone and start life all over again. And while I may not be able to understand why, I can some what appreciate a bit of that insecurity.

Just read the Daily News update. This indeed is a great start!

the ad is very stupid and reflect the very selfish unfair mentality of muslim men, beside the recent incidents of the sexual harassament show that viel or hijab will never stop guys as you can read here:
