The Indians are here!

Have a dinner at home tomorrow so had trouped off to Carrefour to buy some stuff..

To my surprise I saw lots of shelves lined with Indian pickles, curry pastes, chutneys etc.. These are Pataks and Sherwoods of London. Yum, that one thing less to cart from back home..

I am convinced that by the time we leave Cairo, there would be shops / retailers selling Indian spices, dals, ready mixes et al..

..... and the Egyptians are about to get a taste of spicy Indian food!

Hey Manisha..I am an Indian student who will be attending AUC this fall and am looking for apts in Maadi..do you have any suggestions..this is my first time in Egypt and I have heard both good & bad things about Cairo. It's my first time travelling alone and its both frightening and exhilarating @ the same time....I for one cannot wait to experience the culture and the language but since I am a woman my parents are freaking out a lil bit...Do you know of any brokers who can help me find a safe apt??

Thanks a bunch for your awesome blog..

Ziya

Ziya, you will hav a lot of fun in Cairo...its an awesome place...and I have never felt unsafe though there are incidents reported from time to time...

unfortunately I have just moved out of Egypt so will not be able to help you with brokers...I will trya nd ask a few friends and let you know....we had of course used the big institutional brokers...

Maadi si a nice place to live though a lil more expensive than the other suburbs since its primarily an expat suburb...

Thank you for thr lovely words on the blog!

HI Nanda...well some spices you will get here like yellow sarson, cumin, saunf, kalaunji, haldi, tej patta (though the quality isn't great), red chiily powder, dhania & jeera poder...but you wont get rai, curry patta etc.. so if you think you will need them, carry them with you....though i managed pretty well without a lot of them...

On Indian restaurants, you have quite a few now...there's a hotel called Karvin in Helipolis...their food is very good. There is a restaurant called Nile Bukhara in Maadi and Mohandasein, there is Maharani on the boat Le Pascha, and two more in Ramses Hilton and Hyatt...

You dont get Indian dals other than chick peas, lobhia, masoor...so if you are a dal eater you may have a problem, in which case you will need to carry them with you...
