Indian grocer in Cairo!

For all the Indians whose only baggage from back home used to be packets and packets of spices, dals, ready to eat mixes etc, your luggage just got a little lighter!

An enterprising Egyptian obviously figured that the "Indians were coming!" has decided to open a store with Indian groceries. So you get your dals, some spices etc. He has this long list of items which I shall try and reproduce a little later.

His name is Hassan and his outlet is on Road 9.

EDIT: Let me correct the location. He is based in Mohandassein and will home deliver in certain areas. I know he delivers in Maadi. Have asked for his permission to quote his number on my blog. So all of you who want to stock up on whatever is available with him, his number is 0111883800. Have ordered for the first time from him today - toovar dal, local egyptian musard oil and some atta (nisha, hope that gladdens your heart!). Inshaallah, it shall be good!!

HI we are planning to shift to Cairo. I am quite worried about the schooling for my children. Can u tell me what is the level of education as compared to India and what are the monthly school fees.

Manisha said...

Hi! Most of the expats admit their kids to the international schools and Cairo has many of them...while choosing a school pl check if the school is properly accredited or not...Many Indians prefer the British Intl schools as the curriculum would be closer to what is taught back home...

The monthly school fees vary from school to school but international schools can be expensive.. e.g. BISC per term for elementary is around GBP 3700 while for CAC it would be around $7000. theer would also be a one time registration / capital fees which are non-refundable.

You can check out some of the websites to give you an idea

www.cacegypt.org
http://www.bisc.edu.eg/main.php
http://www.ncbis.org/
http://www.iscegypt-sabis.net/

CAC and BISC are quite popular in the Indian community..

Hi Maneesha,

I think you are of great help to people like us. I have little problem.I am looking for Wheat Flour for Indian "Roti" in Cairo and difficult to find it. The most commonly available flour is very soft (Menda Flour), so it sticks to fingure and does not make it like an Indian Roti. So can you guide me the place from where I can find it. I am staying in Maadi (Narco) and at present living without my family so cooking by myself. I hope I will get your help.

Manisha said...

Hi Brijesh, you dont really get atta like you get at home....but try Hassan, theguy whose number I have given in thsi post....I buy my atta from him and its quite decent....well as decent as you can get it here....its a lot better than the wholemeal flour that comes packed and is available in super markets...

Hi Manisha,

It is great to find someone so helpful. We would be shifting to Cairo by May 2009. I did go through the Indian grocer's contact details that you shared on the blog. I want some more information. Are things like chickpea flour(besan), semolina (sooji), puffed rice(poha) also available with him. If not, then how do you arrange for them. We have been living in Dubai for past 4 years. Much to our relief, all Indian food items are readily available here. I hope that explains my worry about this shift. If you could please post the reply on the blog itself or send it to my email: jyoti_saboo@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Manisha said...

Hi Jyoti, am happy to be of help!

First of all, please be prepared for the fac that you will not get many Indian spices, pulses and vegetables in Cairo. But I think thats half the fun of being in Cairo. The excitemnt of going home and comming back with goodies in unparalleled!

Now to the specifics of your query. Chickpeas are available in abundance, unfortunately chickpea flour is not! However, Hassan keeps besan so you are ok! It wont be the same quality as what you get in Dubai but better something than nothing!

Sooji is available in plenty in Cairo. They seem to use semolina a lot! But again be forewarned, its not as fine as teh quality that you get back home but at least its there!

Poha is not available, so you'll have to get from back home. The last i knew Hassan did not keep it. However you do get puffed rice as in moodhi which you can use for bhelpuri. This is currently available only from ISIS in the form of cereal box which calls it puffed rice. It does not taste excatly like puffed rice from home, but its goos as a substitute!

Dont worry about the food, you get used to everything, but you will have fun! Cairo is a wonderful delightful place!

Hi Manisha,
We will be shifting to Egypt in May 2009. I need to know if DSL / Broadband internet connection is available for residential use.
Due to urgent requirements, I will be needing the net connection as soon as I land in Cairo. So just wanted to know how long does it take to get a new connection and which is the best service provider.

Thanks,
Garima

Manisha said...

Hi Garima, welcome to Cairo...you will love the city, its great fun!

DSL/ Broadband is easily available if you have a telephone line which I assume your landlord will provide along with the house!

I use TE Data which is quite good and the turnaround time is 2-3 days if you are unlucky. Mine got done in two days.

Its reasonable and is quite fast.

Also if you are going to live in Maadi, when you go to them tell them that you have been refererd to them by CSA (Community services Association) which is an association run by expat wives to help incoming expats settle in...if you do that you get a 20 le discount on the monthly rentals...you can buy the router or you can rent it from TE Data which will cost you LE 30 per month....

rust this is helpful..let me now if you need any other info though this blogs hould be of some help to you....

have fun settling in!

Manisha said...

Ravalnath

Hi!

I have responded to your email.

First of all, if you are looking for the Indian Association, get in touch with Mr Kotiyal at the Indian embassy who is the Community Liasion Officer and who will put you in touch with some of the prominent Indians in Cairo.

There is an Indian Associatin in Cairo who is currently headed by a wonderful gentleman called Zaheer Shah. You will find him and his wife very welcoming.

If you call the Indian embasy at the Chancery in Zamalek you can get in touch with Mr Kotiyal who will give you the necesary numbers....

Dont worry, the indian commuity here is fantastic! There are quite a few Indians around now......

For starters I hope this is helpful...if you have any queries, pl feel free to email me...I would be happy to help out!

Hi Manisha,
It is nice to know about people like you who are of immense help in providing information. I am currently in Mumbai and have been offered an opportunity to work in Cairo for a company based in Cairo. If all goes well I probably will move into Cairo by the end of the year with my family. Guess you would already by now know the questions I would ask you.

1) How safe is Cairo (it being close to Gaza)? Can I move in with my family (wife & 1 kid)?
2) What is the standard of living and what is the normal expenditure for a month (I am a vegetarian). I got to know of the expenses towards schooling from your blog. This would help me while I am negatiating with my employer.

I would appreciate if you can let me know your e-mail id. You can e-mail me on arunrao2504@gmail.com

Would appreciate if you can provide any other information that would be of help to me / my family.

Regards
Arun Rao

Hi Manisha,

I have been offered a job in Cairo. I am currently in Mumbai and just want know how much does it cost to make a decent living in Cairo. I know a lot of it depends on ones lifestyle, but for a family of 3-4 inlcuding a kid of 6 yrs, a vegetarian diet.. how much do you think is good? As a part of fringe benefits the company is offering me a flat & car. I will check on schooling from the information you have provided earlier in your blog. Thanks for your assistance.

Mushtaq, my apologies for the delay in responding but I was not online for almost over a month....

Can I request you to drop me an email with your queries on duttmanisha@gmail.com?

Thanks

Manisha said...

Hi Arun, beleive me Cairo is a great fun city to live in! And not too expensive! In fact I find that India is more expensive than Cairo is in most basic stuff for day to day living.....

fruits & vegetables are very good, fresh and generally very reasonable....housing can be expensive depending on where you want to live so if the co is giving you a flat thats a big chunk of your expense out.... petrol is very cheap so no worries on that front....

schooling can be expensive depending onw here your kid is going...some of teh intrenational schools are expensive so check/negotiate with the company to pay for your kids education if you can.....

electricity is not very expensive.//if you are using a/cs quite regularly then you would tot up bills of max around LE 500-600 ball park...

cabs are not exteremely expensive...

cooking gas is very cheap much cheaper than back home....

I'm planning to move to egypt sometime this year from Ireland. I have got some idea about cairo by going through your blog. I would like to know the availability of rice at cairo.

Manisha said...

Senthil, rice is easily available in Cairo...including Basmati rice but I must warn you the Basmati rice quality is diffrent from what you get in India or the traditional Basmati rice avalable elsewhere but rice is available at all price and quality points....

Hi Manisha ,

I am sanjay landed in Cairo lat month now staying in dusit thani hotel EI tessen street New Cairo.
I am having a great problem of food in here my work place is American university new Cairo. Can you give me some advice how do iget indian food .

Manisha said...

Hi Sanjay! Welcome to Cairo, you'll have a lot of fun! I am sorry bt I am not sure what you mean in terms of Indian food - cooked food or raw food?

If you are looking for raw food, try carrefour...you'll get all the general veg/ fruits and some Indian masalas and chutneys achaars etc..

In terms of specific Indian vegetables, while you wont get them usually, there is a vegetable chap called Ali in Maadi who sells stuff like Lauki, torai, Karela, long bhindi etc... even Hassan will be able to source some for you...

If you are looking for cooked food, then there are essentialy hotels and restaurants only,.....

Suhail said...

Hi Manisha,

Will appreciate if you could guide me with good Indian restaurants around Cairo, not the ones in Five star hotels.
Is there any chats, pav bhaji's here, just wondering ???

I live in Dubai, got married to an egytpian in cairo.
would like to bring few of my friends and relatives to visit cairo, wana give them some good time, and enjoy indian food aswell in due course.

looking forward to you response-
suhailmahmed@gmail.com

thanks
Suhail

Manisha said...

Suhail,hi Welcome to Cairo...its a great fun city, needless to say, being married to an Egyptian you'll def get to appreciate the local flavour of the place!

But fist, reality check...unlike Dubai you do not have many Indian restaurants....not surprising since Dubai is practically Indian!

There is Nile Bukhara in Maadi and Mohandasein, Maharaja in Maadi, and Karvin Hotel in Heliopolis. There is a restaurant called Yasmin which makes and delivers kebabs and biryani but you have to give him a day's notive....but unfortunatey, there is no place selling chaat, pao bhaji etc ...thats a pleasure that you will have to wait for on those trips back home!

But try the local places esp Abu el Seed etc...which offer good Egyptian food! Dont know where you are staying but the ABu el Seed in Zamalek is quite happeneing esp in the evenings!

As we r planning to accept the offer but we are also very confused these days about the vegetables, spices, standard of living over there and what is the normal food expenditure for a month (we are pure vegetarian)?. I have heard that either of the spouse get job thr , will i nt be able to do any job even i am an honours graduate and a CA finalist. Some of my relatives said i will definately get bored and frustrated if i wont be allowed to do job thr as the communication and language will be a big problem as they dont understand english and u wont be able to get thru arabic and thus u wont be able to interact even wid ur neighbours. We have to confirm or set aside the offer by tomorrow , i knw i am expecting reply frm u very soon but today only i came to knw abt ur this blog which gave me positive viberations and so plz reply asap coz i am really in the dire need to hear from u, i have sent u mail at ur gmail id too if possible for u plz send ur contact number via mail so that i can talk to u directly to clear all my doubts. THANKS , Waiting for ur response .......Krati

Manisha said...

Krati, dont let anyone colour your judegement about th eplace...I oved Cairo! I think its a fabulous place to live in! Lots of history, very nice people and enough to do....

I usd to be a senior banker but quit my job when i got to Cairo and have no regrets...I spent the last two years exploring the city, learning the language, travelling etc...and I did not get bored or frustrated...I think its up to the individual to either crib or make the most of what you have...

Yes its not easy to get a work permit to work but you have to keep trying and sometimes you can get lucky...

and yes language is a barrier but mist Egyptians can understand a bit of English so its not a omplete impasse and you can learn basic Arabic which will help you interact...and if you are in a place like Zamalek or Maadi you will find people speak passable English....

I have also responded to you on Gmail but feel free to call me..

Hi Manisha, This is Arun. I would be in Cairo for a month. I need an info from you. I am a vegetarian. How easy is its to find veg food in Cairo. Your inputs would indeed be helpful. Thanks, Arun.

Manisha said...

Arun, when I first moved to Cairo I was a veg with lots of apprehensions too...but I didn't fid it too difficult...yes, you may not have as much choice as you would back home but every menu will have at least a dish or two....

Fruits and vegetables are available in plenty, though in the summer months the variety reduces a bit...but yes, you will not get typical Indian vegetables like lauki, torai, karela, tinda etc...you get small okra, cauliflower, cabbage, potatoes, beans, peas, spinach etc which you can comfortably cook..Fruits ae available in plenty and very good quality.

There are a few Indian restaurants that you can go to - Bile Bukhara at Maadi and Mohandasein, there are Indian restaurants both at Ramses Hilton and Hyatt, Maharani on the boat Le Pascha, Masala at the hotel Karvin at Heliopolis...so you wont be completely at sea!

Have fun and enjoy your one month in Cairo!

Manisha said...

oops...I meant Nile (and not Bile) Bukhara

Arun Kumar Muchellavari said...

Thanks indeed, Manisha for those inputs :-)

Jiga, welcome to Cairo....its a wonderful citya nd you will enjoy your stay here...hmm...an area where there are a ot of ndians? As far as I know, of the Indinas that i know, there is no specific place which is inhabited largely by Indians... I dont think there is a Little India or Southall equivalent in Cairo...I know lots of Indians living in Maadi, Mohandasein, Zamalek, Heliopolis...actually all over...apologies, I know its not very helpful...

Hi Manisha,

I am planning to move to Cairo very shortly. I am coming alone leaving my family in India.

Would seek your help/inputs on the below points:-

1. Eating outside - how costly will it be? I can adjust myself with any kind of food. Even now, I mostly live on half cooked vegetables, fruits, bread and oats. This is what I have decided to continue when I am in Cairo. But still if I need to have a good meal in a day what would it cost. Since i am not good in cooking, I am little annoyed.

2. What items will u suggest me to carry with me related to food?

3. Do we get rice in Cairo?

4. What are the general medication that i can carry from India?

Request your response to vairavan26@gmail.com mail id. I have also sent you a separate mail in this regard.

Thanks,
Vairavan

This the 10th city I am relocationg since 1996 and I never crib. As such apart from language, everything is nice, yes it bit tuff for my wife to find veg food, normally we cook at home. She just courierd 80kg from India. We are pure Gujju you know, out of which it must be 50% grocceries. I am dying to get Indian channels, Show Time and Art gives only B4U. Is any one arranges Indian channels, star etc which are free to air? Whom should I contact? Warm Regards

am glad that you liked Cairo! Wow thats a lot of cities to move around but it must have been fun! I would have enjoyed myself thoroughly, love traveling and seeing new places!

Yup, veg food is a bit of an issue but you will normally find at least 1-2 veg items in every restaurant... yes dals etc re a problem..butI didn't find it too difficult to manage _ I am a veg too!

You can get all the Indian channels but for that you wll have to ask someone to get you the Pehla card from Dubai. That will give you all the Indian channels!

Hi Manisha,

it's really nice to see yr reply which is going to help me come to cairo in May month. I've got lots of answer from this blog but I would like to know more about :-

1. Medical facility in Cairo.

2. Is there any children play area?

3. Can school give admission in month of May to 4 year old daughter?.

4. Which langauge children use to communicate with each other in School? English, Arabic etc.

I bit worry about my daughter health and education.

regards
Nishita (ngarora@gmail.com)

Manisha said...

Hi Nishita,
At the outset let me mention that I have relocated from Cairo so I will be a little rusted on the data...
a/ medical facilities are quite fine. We used to go to the As-Salam International hospital that s in Maadi. An Indian, Harish Pillai, is the CEO there; you’ll get his name and number from the embassy. He is a wonderful guy. But you would need to get in touch with him only in case of dire emergencies; otherwise the hospital and its doctors are quite competent. For regular stuff, we used to use a doctor called Dr Ghaly who lives in Maadi. But in general, medical facilities are quite decent.

b/ Unfortunately, we only looked at the international schools when we moved to Cairo plus all my friends – Indian and expat – had kids going to international schools so I am quite clueless about any other school

c/ In the international schools, English is usually the medium of communication. In a local school, it will probably be Arabic both for teaching and speaking
d/ Atta as you get it in India is not available but you have a couple of guys who provide atta. One of them used to be Hassan, who is mentioned somewhere in my blog. You will have to check if he is still around. But if you ask around in the Indian community, you will find there are a couple of people who supply atta which is not as good as what you get at home but is good enough. However, you do get wholemeal flour for breads which at a pinch can be used for making rotis etc...

Have fun in Cairo! It’s a fantastic fun city and has a great Indian community! Where are you going to be staying?

Cheers
Manisha

Thanks a lot. My e mail id is sjhitu@gmail.com

Hitu, hope you qhave a good stint in Cairo! Its a lovely city and the people aare friendly. Unfortunately have little or no knowledge about Al Rehab City so shall be unable to help on that front.

As for me, unfortunately, I have relocated a year back from Cairo. I am no longer living there.

In terms of pulses, earlier when I was there, you could only get whole masoor, kabuli channa and lobhia there Anything else you needed to carry from India or get from Dubai. Hassan had started to keep some pulses etc. I know Carrefour had started to keep some Indian achaars and seices by the time we left. Even atta was not easily available, but there are a couple of people like Hassan whoprovide you with atta. Its not the same quality as home but its better than nothing!

Besan again is not available, we used to get ours from Dubai.

I am so sorry for the extremely delayed response but I have been travellinga nd checking the blog only once in a while...

Its probably too late to answer your queries, but yes, it is fine to travel in cabs.. I have done that once in a while.. they may occasionally take ypou around in circles :-) but I have never had reason to feel scared / unsafe.

For a travel guide, its always helpful to have one at the pyramids cos they tell you a lot of stories and make it come alive for you, but you could do it on your own, just read up stuff on that.. Tour egypt is a good site to get a lot of info....

As for travel agent, I used to use a local tarvel agent called See Egypt. I found their guys to be quite competent!
